DNG Question Time – Auto-enrolment

Re-enrolment for pensions is under the spotlight in this week’s Question Time blog. Auto-enrolment has been with us for over three years now and many employers are receiving re-enrolment notifications. Here we will answer some common questions we get on auto-enrolment.

Under the Pensions Act 2008 all employers must enrol certain members of staff into a workplace pension and contribute to it – this is known as auto-enrolment. Once an auto-enrolment scheme is in place the employer has to undertake a re-enrolment process every three years.

Q: What do I need to do regarding re-enrolment?

Three years after your auto-enrolment duties commenced it is a legal requirement to re-enrol members of staff who are not already in your workplace pension scheme. They can then choose to opt-out of the pension scheme if they wish. You can be fined for not performing the re-enrolment process.

During the re-enrolment process it is also a good time to check the data held for its accuracy. Employee details such as address, email address and surname can be common areas which change and may need updating.

Q: When do I need to re-enrol?

You must elect a re-enrolment date when you are coming up to the three year anniversary of your auto-enrolment staging date. The date can be three months either side of the staging date, giving a six month window.

Q: Is there anything else I need to do?

After re-enrolment employers are required to submit a re-declaration of compliance to The Pensions Regulator.

Additionally it is important to review your pension scheme and provider periodically; many companies will choose to do this at the same time as their re-enrolment process. Things to consider may include; the quality of service from your pensions provider, investment performance and the level of fees charged by your pension provider.

Q: Can you help with the process?

Yes of course! We have an excellent payroll team with over 20 year’s experience. The team deal with auto-enrolment and re-enrolment administration and queries for our clients.
