Tips for successfully working from home

With the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak more people that ever are working from home, and in many cases this may be for the first time. If you are not used to working from home, it can be quite an adjustment initially. We would like to offer some simple tips to help you make the transition to working from home run as smoothly as possible, while keeping up productivity.

Keep to a routine

Humans are creatures of habit and having a routine, even when working from home, can help productivity. Set your alarm, conduct your ‘normal’ morning routine and get dressed. Take your lunch and any tea breaks at similar times as you would when in the office. Setting daily routines can help you transition to working from home more smoothly.

Dedicate a workstation

As many may have now started working from home on reasonably short notice, you may not have had as much time to prepare an ideal work setup. However where possible set up a specific space for working, whether this is a formal desk setup or a makeshift desk using a dining table or dressing table. Avoid working from the sofa or bed and dedicate a specific area for working – this will also help you to step away from work at the end of the day.

Connect to your team

If you are not used to working from home it can be quite isolating, so make sure to connect with your team. This can in the form of regular catchups on projects via telephone or video call. Applications such as Microsoft Teams can also help your team to connect and keep in contact. Keeping in contact with the team can boost morale and help to reduce feelings of isolation.
